The Hootenanny Shack
On the way to Waldport from Philomath on Highway 34 there's this little red house that has HOOTENANNY in big white letters on the roof. It looks like it might have been built in the 1930's or 40's. The yard is well kept, but now there's a tall cyclone fence surrounding the place to keep people out.

I've always wondered about this place, and why someone would paint that on their roof. I wonder if it was a place that loggers used to go to dance and get plastered in the old days. It's right on the highway, and the Alsea River is on the other side of the road. We always say, "There's the Hootenanny Shack" when we drive by on the way to the coast.

Thanks so much to Anonymous for all the background info on the Hootenanny place. I hope you get time to enjoy it often. It's in an ideal locale.

My grandparents bought the Hootenanny Cabin in the early 1950,s for a place to go steelhead fishin and deer huntin. It was always good luck to us. Originally, it was part of a homestead, The cabin was built out of used lumber from the one room school house located at Bauers (Highway 34 and Thistle Rd). I don't know when but the 20's sounds right. Later, the cabin was sold as part of a 4 acre lot that was sold separate from the homestead. It is now owned by my father and has been in my family for as long as I can remember. The name Hootenanny came with the place and has always been written up on the roof.
Waldport & Newport residents know about this cabin. In fact it's a landmark. People have stopped to ask if we will put Hootenanny back on the roof. That was when the cabin was being re-roofed. Others had stopped just to let us know they enjoy seeing Hootenanny on the roof. The property on the river side of the highway belongs to the cabin also. The only source of water is from a natural spring. It tastes really cold and refreshing.
That's so amazing! It would be a dream come true to have a place like that!
I bought the Hootenanny 2. 1/2 years ago. I have been remodeling the inside and reroofed it as well. There was 2 other layers that had Hootenanny on them. I will be putting the Hootenanny back on this summer. The inside is turning out breathtaking. I am in search of history of the cabin. I have found some, and working with people on more. But any info would so much be appreciated. I am a Waldport native and swam below the cabin when I was a kid, as well as my kids. To own this cabin is a dream. The water is very good and we have an off grid power system. We put in insolation and sheet rock, wrapped the 2x4 beans with wood and new flooring and a whole lot more. It will be forever red on the outside. Will not be adding any additions, I like it the way it is. I will pass this cabin down to my kids.
